Use visuals (icons, diagrams) to aid comprehension

Reading time: 2 min

Goal: Encourage writers to use clear, relevant visuals to support understanding, especially for complex information or readers who struggle with text.

Pictures can say a lot—sometimes more than words. That’s why using visuals like icons, diagrams, or images is a great way to help readers understand your message.

For example, if you are explaining how to sort waste, you can show an icon next to each type of material:

  • 🫙 Glass
  • 📰 Paper
  • 🧴 Plastic

Visuals help:

  • Make the information clearer
  • Show steps in a process
  • Support readers who struggle with text

Diagrams are also useful for explaining how something works. To make sure that they are easily understandable, keep it simple:

  • Use one idea per image
  • Avoid too many details
  • Always match the image with the text

Make sure your visuals are easy to understand and meaningful for your audience.

When used well, visuals make your content more friendly, engaging, and easier to remember.
